In medieval times, this town was granted the right to have the only market for 6 2/3 miles around.

The town was only granted market rights in 1639.

In the year 1300, the town was granted the right to hold a weekly market and an annual fair.

In 1233 the town was granted Kulm law city rights.

In 1278 the town was granted its first market to be held on a Thursday.

In 1250, the town was granted though it has changed several times.

In 1190 the town was granted the right to hold a market each Wednesday.

The town was granted city rights and coat of arms on March 29, 1792.

In the 17th century, the town was granted to the Radziwiłł family and changed hands a few times.

Because of that, on July 26, 1933, the town was granted with a city charter.
