He said the administration believed that Cornell could make up the state's contribution to the supercomputer center with university funds.

In addition to network facilities, the project included three supercomputer centers.

Florida State was awarded a Federal grant in 1984 for a large supercomputer center, which has a $12 million annual budget.

"The last thing a hospital wants to do is run its own supercomputer center," Mr. Hey said.

When the program to create supercomputer centers began, there were few supercomputers at educational institutions.

"And one of the most critical elements is the supercomputer center."

The supercomputer center is expected to open early next year.

"They were just pleased to see a company come in and help them set up a supercomputer center."

The university has been designated as one of two national supercomputer centers, linking 37 other institutions in 18 states.
