Sahinguvu is a member of the opposition Union for National Progress.

Whatever conciliatory gestures the Socialists were making, leaders of the opposition Union of Democratic Forces said they would not enter into a coalition government.

Both the Socialists and the opposition Union of Democratic Forces are inflexible and tolerant of corruption in their ranks.

"We can accept Fujimori's re-election last year," said Carlos Chipoco, a legislator from the opposition Union for Peru party.

Three are from the opposition Union of Democratic Forces, and two are from the Agrarian Union.
