Ms. Singer knows well the agony of that choice.

The league would like to set up its own shelter, but Ms. Singer estimated the cost at more than $200,000.

"I was uncomfortable with the idea at first," said Ms. Singer, a science teacher.

Ms. Singer said, adding that a more likely scenario is the call for help.

"In this economy people want value for money," Ms. Singer said.

Ms. Singer also avoids the word in her advertising package.
