In 1529, he wrote the Large Catechism, a manual for pastors and teachers, as well as a synopsis, the Small Catechism, to be memorised by the people themselves.

The first edition of Madrid's book on frequent Communion appeared, as did Canisius's Large Catechism.

Luther's Large Catechism consisted of works written by Martin Luther and compiled Christian canonical texts, published in April 1529.

Calvin had written an earlier catechism during his first stay in Geneva which was largely based on Martin Luther's Large Catechism.

In the Large Catechism, Luther calls Holy Absolution the third sacrament, referring to it as Penance.
