The proceeds of the sale of the jardinière, estimated at $50,000 to $80,000, will benefit the Gilbert Collection at Somerset House.

And each of the jewels on display at the Gilbert Collection betrays the personality of their creator.

"Ever since the Gilbert Collection opened, it has been hard to find antique ones, and the prices have gone up," Ms. Locke said.

The show at Yale, which includes related manuscripts, books, maps, textiles and letters, travels to the Gilbert Collection in London in October.

The best collections are in the Hermitage Museum and the Gilbert Collection in London.

In May, Somerset House will also make room for the Gilbert Collection, a group of gold, silver and micromosaics mostly from stately English houses.
